The Encyclopedia of Black Collectables says Currier and Ives was
a well-known 19th century printmaker. They painted quite a few black
subjects. Nathaniel Currier perfected hand-coloring black and white
stone litographs and started his print business in 1852. They
published many political and humerous prints that they "believed to
be true".
