original artist is A. Graff(1736 - 1813). It has been museum
mounted and cleaned.
This is a portrait of Johann Friedrich Bause(1738 - 1814).
He was An etcher who reproduced in copper portraits of prominent
contemporaries painted by Oeser and A. Graff. From 1766 he
taught at the Kunstakademie in Leipzig.
Anton Graff was born in Switzerland and was the leading German
portrait painter of the 18th century. In 1766 he moved to
Dresden to teach at their new Academy. He recorded himself as
having painted some 1,240 portraits in his career including some of
his famous contemporaries such as Lessing, Herder, and Schiller.
