Beautiful old marine ship painting, oil on canvas with rocky
coastline, possible the Grand Manan. I believed it to be an English ship. The dark navy flag is
believed to be that of the Flag of the Lord High Admiral, it became
known as the Admiralty Flag after 1710 when the office was put into
commission and remained so, with a brief intermission when the Duke
of Clarence was created Lord High in Admiral in 1827, until the
board was abolished in 1964. I have located on the back of the the
painting the letters C.L. and the numbers 1789, these could be
artist initials and possibly a date but I can't verify that. There
is also some writing in the lower right hand corner of the painting, but I have tried everything possible to identify it. The
dimensions are:
Frame, 33 1/4" wide
28 3/4" length
Painting, 25 3/4" wide
20 3/4 " length
