Portrait of African American Couple and painting of a Church
View Pictures

This rare portrait of an African American couple was discovered behind a watercolor of a church. The picture of the African American couple appears to have a bluish tint because of the fluorescent lighting and reflection off of the glass.

The portrait dates from ca. 1890-1900.  Its condition is excellent, and it has been museum mounted in a beautiful new mahogany frame.  They were purchased at an antiques store in Abita Springs, Louisiana.  I believe the church was in Slidell, Louisiana but is now gone.

Framed, the portrait measures:

  • 31" wide
  • 27" high

The watercolor is on paper and is signed "ROLLIE GRAY 10-69".  It is in its original wood frame, which had several layers of white enamel paint.

The frame measures:

  • 30-1/2" wide
  • 26-1/2" high
