This rare portrait of an African American couple was discovered
behind a watercolor of a church. The picture of the African American
couple appears to have a bluish tint because of the fluorescent
lighting and reflection off of the glass.
The portrait dates from ca. 1890-1900. Its condition is
excellent, and it has been museum mounted in a beautiful new
mahogany frame. They were purchased at an antiques store in
Abita Springs, Louisiana. I believe the church was in Slidell,
Louisiana but is now gone.
Framed, the portrait measures:
The watercolor is on paper and is signed "ROLLIE GRAY 10-69".
It is in its original wood frame, which had several layers of white
enamel paint.
