These asparagus tongs were hand made by Ireland silversmiths. The
tongs are marked "Sterling" on the end of one of the handles. Early
in the 18th century the silver makers in Cork, Ireland used the mark
"Sterling". It was also used in various other forms including
abbreiviations: ster., sterg., starling, stirling, starlin, and
sterlin between 1710 and 1719.
The tongs weigh in at 164 troy oz. and measure:
- 9-1/4" long
- 3" diameter sunflower ends
My information came from the Book of Old Silver by Seymour B.
Wyler.
